Who Are We
The mission of the Learning Education and Awareness Foundation (LEAF) is to foster learning activities in the community, increase educational opportunities for the minority or underserved, and create awareness of different cultures for elimination of prejudice and discrimination.
The foundation was started in May 2016. List of some of the activities and programs undertaken by LEAF based on the purpose and mission of this organization over the last year include:
- Weekend Language Enrichment Classes for school aged children – The organization rents space from a charter school to teach Punjabi language (regional Indian Language) to the children of age 4 to 18 years in Charlotte, NC area. There are 42 kids enrolled for school year 2016-17. It is now looking for an on-line platform to supplement teaching beyond once a week and to increase the reach beyond the city of Charlotte, NC.
- Educational Support for the needy in third world countries – LEAF has partnered with another non-profit organization, Missiondeep Trust in Amritsar, India (http://missiondeep.org/wp/?page_id=27). Missiondeep Trust provides school and boarding to over 380 orphans and under-privileged children of age 3 to 18 years in Amritsar, India. LEAF equipped the Computer Lab of the school with computers, furniture and backup power supply system. The Foundation is also providing for the salary of the computer teachers. The goal is to help the kids learn certified computer skills so that they could support themselves in future. There are plans to partner with the school to provide other vocational trainings as well.
- Musical Instrument Training – LEAF is supporting musicians that provide training to children of age 4 to 16 years in Charlotte, Raleigh and Greensboro areas in some Classical Indian musical instruments.
